About Cluj

The name of the City of Cluj is believed to have been descended from "Castrum Clus", first used in the 12-th century as the name of the citadel surrounding the city. "Clus" means "closed" in Latin and refers to the hills that surround the city.

Having one of the most vibrant economies in the country, and a population of around 330 000 inhabitants, Cluj is today a vibrant cultural and educational city, with many things to offer for its residents and visitors, alike.

The main square is of particular interest, featuring 18th and 19th century buildings, numerous shops and restaurants, and the 15th century St. Michael's Church, which dominates the square's area, recognized as one of the finest examples of gothic architecture in Romania, is, without doubt a "must".

The 18th century baroque Banffy Palace, also in the square, is definitely worth seeing, as well, when exploring the city. The Palace houses the weaponry and Romanian art collections of the Art Museum.

Those who wish to get more acquainted with the region can pay a visit to the open-air section of the Ethnographic Museum of Transylvania, a true display of folk architecture, and, for those seeking entertainment, the Opera or a classical music concert offered by the Cluj Philharmonic are excellent choices.

The Pharmacy Museum is great for visitors interested in medicine, and Alexandru Borza Botanical Garden is a fabuous choice if accompanied by the family, being particularly appreciated by the little ones.

Day trips to nearby destinations such as the Medieval town of Bistrita, Apuseni Mountains & Scarisoara Cave or Targu Mures can compliment the attractions found within Cluj and offer extra delight.
